Removable Dentures
Removable Dentures
Removable dentures are custom-made dental appliances designed to replace missing teeth, which can be easily removed for routine cleaning and maintenance. The prosthetic teeth are crafted from acrylic resin or composite materials to closely mimic the shade and translucency of natural teeth. Supported by either a tissue-colored plastic or a durable metal framework, these dentures restore your ability to chew and speak confidently. It is highly recommended to wear them during the day and remove them at night to allow your gum tissues to rest and recover from pressure.

Types of Removable Dentures
Acrylic Base Removable Dentures
Acrylic base removable dentures are generally more budget-friendly and economical than metal framework alternatives. They offer excellent esthetics because they contain fewer visible metallic components. However, they possess lower structural strength compared to metal bases and are more susceptible to fracturing or breaking if accidentally dropped due to the nature of the acrylic plastic material.
Acrylic Dentures are divided into 2 main types:
- Rigid Acrylic Dentures (Hard Plastic)
- Flexible Dentures (Valplast / Flexible Plastic)
1. Rigid Acrylic Removable Dentures
Rigid acrylic dentures are fabricated using a pink acrylic base meticulously finished to resemble natural gum tissue. They can be engineered to replace a single missing tooth or multiple teeth. Due to the rigidity of the plastic material, they may occasionally cause minor initial gum discomfort. For partial restorations, they typically feature small metallic wire clasps that wrap around your remaining natural teeth for retention.

2. Flexible Removable Dentures (Valplast)
Flexible dentures are fabricated from a specialized, lightweight thermoplastic material that offers exceptional flexibility. This material makes them highly break-resistant and durable. The translucent base blends well with natural tissue tones, offering natural-looking aesthetics. While they are higher in price than traditional hard acrylics, they utilize metal-free, tissue-colored clasps for a comfortable fit.
Cast Partial Metal Removable Dentures
Metal base dentures feature a medical-grade cast chrome-cobalt alloy framework. Because metal can be cast very thin yet remain strong, this denture fits much closer to the palate and gums, minimizing bulkiness and speech interference compared to thick plastic options. Metal is non-porous, meaning it does not absorb oral fluids, odors, or stains. With meticulous care and regular checkups, a metal-framework denture can last for many years with proper care, though metallic clasps may be slightly visible in certain areas of the mouth when smiling widely.

Understanding the Main Categories of Dentures
Modern restorative dentistry generally classifies dentures into two primary categories based on how they are secured in the mouth:
Removable Dentures
Custom appliances that replace missing teeth and can be easily taken out for cleaning. The teeth are made of plastic or composite materials attached to an acrylic or metal base.
Fixed Dentures / Dental Implants
A dental implant acts as a permanent artificial tooth root. It consists of a small titanium screw surgically anchored into the jawbone. Once integrated, a permanent crown, bridge, or fixed denture is securely mounted on top to permanently replace missing teeth.
