Dentist comparing tooth shades with a whitening colour guide beside a patient's smile

What are Dental Veneers?

Dental Veneers are custom-made, ultra-thin shells crafted from composite resin or ceramic materials. They are meticulously designed to replicate the appearance and shade of natural tooth enamel. Placed directly over the front surface of the teeth, veneers bond seamlessly to enhance your smile. Unlike “Dental Crowns”, which encase the entire tooth, veneers only cover the visible front section.

On average, dental veneers have a lifespan of 10 to 15 years, depending on individual care and daily habits. To support natural-looking results, the procedure should be performed by an experienced dentist in cosmetic dentistry.

Types of Dental Veneers

Composite Veneers

This procedure involves applying tooth-colored composite resin directly onto the tooth surface inside the mouth to reshape and alter the tooth color. This technique relies heavily on the dentist’s artistic skill and experience. The primary advantage is that it requires minimal to no tooth preparation (shaving). However, it takes longer to perform clinically. If the margins are not perfectly contoured, it can lead to issues like bad breath and gum inflammation. Composite resin, a mixture of resin and silica, is also less stain-resistant and has a shorter-lived polish compared to porcelain.

Ceramic Veneers (Porcelain Veneers)

For ceramic veneers, the dentist gently prepares the outer enamel, takes a dental impression, and helps the patient select their desired tooth shade. The impression is then sent to a professional dental laboratory to fabricate premium porcelain restorations. Porcelain offers exceptional lifelike translucency, mimicking natural teeth, and is highly resistant to staining. A temporary veneer is placed on the patient’s teeth to protect them while waiting for the final lab piece to be bonded during the next visit.
